‘She won’t see me, or anyone else. I tried, I made the nurse promise to say it was me, to say it was Chantal, or Jeudi or Chris - she didn’t want to see us. Our mothers won’t tell us what’s happening, or how badly she’s hurt. They just avoid the subject and say we can see her soon. I just need to know, I have to know - is she going to be alright?’

He had known Lettie Prochain since before he was born; their mothers loved to tell them about how the toddler with the blonde curls had hugged her adopted-aunt’s huge baby bump, listening to the twins inside. They had grown up together and Giovedi had loved her all his life - he didn’t know how much, until that day.

He was visiting the museum - he liked the galleries of paintings, taking lessons from them in colour and composition for his photographs. It was early morning, before all the tourist started thronging about - he was just walking up the steps when he heard heavy footfalls and the chiming sound of someone counting. In French.

He turned, and barely caught a glmpse of her as she went running past, on the other side of the empty street. Giovedi never understood how he heard her above the traffic, how the sound of her breathing was singled out among the sounds of the busy city. She was only there for a moment, a flash of blonde hair and then she was gone. In that moment, the thought that crossed his mind was simple; ‘Io vado a sposare quella ragazza.’

‘I’m going to marry that girl.’
